Each year, we take thousands of students and adults out on the Clearwater. We have a tireless crew, great interns, knowledgeable educators, and a well-respected program. None of it would be possible without the volunteers who each give a week of their time to come on board to teach, sail, learn, and live with the crew on the sloop.  For Volunteer Week, we present the experiences of past volunteers in their own words. Join us! JAKE SALT

Jake Salt (1)

Jake Salt volunteered on board Clearwater for the first time last year.

I had an “organizational crush” on Clearwater for years before going aboard for a week with the crew. Growing up, I’d seen the iconic boat sailing the Hudson and heard from friends about their romantic (and physically challenging) experience as temporary crew members.

Years later, when the opportunity presented itself, I was thrilled to turn in a volunteer application. My week with the captains, crew and fellow volunteers exceeded my high expectations. I was quickly welcomed by the knowledgeable and creative cast of characters on board. The structured and physically demanding aspects of the days facilitated an immediate camaraderie that I remember fondly.

Some of the AMAZING highlights of my volunteer week included:

  • Sailing with young students
  • Exploring the history and art of the Hudson River
  • Seeing my first Bald Eagles
  • Witnessing the leaves begin to change color (I recommend volunteering in early autumn!)
  • Disembarking in NYC for the largest Climate Change rally in history.

I highly recommend volunteering with the crew on Clearwater – it’s an experience you won’t soon forget.–Jake Salt
