Sloop Clearwater Takes to the Hudson, Continuing Pete Seeger’s mission for it’s 53rd Year

BEACON, NY – As the world celebrates what would have been Clearwater founder, folk musician and activist, Pete Seeger’s 103rd birthday, the captains, crew and staff of America’s environmental flagship, the Hudson River sloop Clearwater prepare to launch for their 53rd sailing season of environmental education and advocacy on the Hudson.

After completing a major restoration project of the sloop’s topsides this winter, (thanks in part to support from New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation and the Clearwater Century Fund) Clearwater will return to the river and “splash” in early May at Scarano’s Boatyard in Albany. This winters’ restoration included work above the waterline from the chain plates forward. All the planks and frames including the top timbers and stanchions were replaced. More details of the restoration can be found here.

Once Clearwater returns to the water, she will return to the Clearwater Home Port at the Hudson River Maritime Museum in Kingston where the Spring crew will begin to uprig the sloop and prepare the tall ship for sailing with passengers.

Executive Director, David Toman commented, “This an exciting time for the organization; with a freshly restored sloop, new ship captain and crew, and a quickly-filling sail schedule, 2022 is shaping up to be a great year for Clearwater and to get out and experience the beauty of the river.”

Passengers can join Clearwater public sails this spring for breathtaking views of the Hudson Valley and unforgettable experiences with family and friends. The sloop will hold its first public sails in June. As a membership benefit, Clearwater members receive advance notice of Clearwater’s sailing schedule; the schedule will be available to the general public later this week.

This year, Clearwater will sail from docks between Albany and New York City, June through October.
