Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, America’s flagship environmental organization, is pleased to announce its 2011 spring-summer public sailing schedule, found on Clearwater’s website at www.clearwater.org/come-sailing/public-sail-schedule. The public is invited to review the schedule and book their summer sail adventure online.

The schooner Mystic Whaler joins the sloop this season from April through June, to complement Clearwater’s educational and public sail programs. The Mystic Whaler begins its public sail season in Rensselaer, NY, on Saturday April 16. Both vessels will offer public sails at Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival on Saturday and Sunday, June 18 and 19 at Croton Point Park, Croton-on-Hudson, NY.

Public sails are a great way for individuals and families to experience the River, with the boats departing from several docks from Albany to New York City. Three-hour sails include a dockside orientation before departure, otter trawl to gather specimens for the fish tank, a call for “all hands to the halyards” to help hoist the sails, a presentation on Clearwater’s history and mission, music by the crew with sing-a-longs, and an opportunity to take the tiller. Clearwater sails rain or shine; it is recommended that individuals take the weather into account when booking a sail.

While onboard, passengers enjoy the experience of sailing on an historic tall ship. Each sail is an ecological adventure as well as a voyage of discovery, learning about the Hudson, and joining in songs about sailing and the environment. Of course, all sails include time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the River!

A variety of dates are still open to book a sail onboard the Clearwater and Mystic Whaler. Sails are $50 for adults; $35 for members; and $15 for children 12 years of age and younger. To book a sail aboard either vessel, or for more information, please contact Catherine Stankowski, Sail Program Manager, at (845) 265-8080 x7107 or at sailcoord@clearwater.org
