By: Kat Murphy, Educator aboard Mystic Whaler
Linda Richards from Clearwater’s “Power of Song” Program came onboard the Mystic Whaler for Wednesday morning’s sail with the Glenham School. The Power of Song provides an interactive learning experience that exposes students to socially conscious music and empowers them to be active on issues that concern them. During the sail Linda led students through music stations. Each group came up with lyrics about their experience during the sail to the tune of “Sweet Home Alabama”. While heading back to the dock, everyone sang together, with each group taking a turn to sing the verse they had written.

Sweet Home Hudson River

Where the water is so blue

Sweet Home Hudson River

You don’t know what you can do

Giving students the opportunity to reflect on their experience onboard the Mystic Whaler through song provides an important form of creative expression. Students gain a strong sense of shared experience and community bonding that is not always present their everyday lives. The Power of Song is an integral part of Clearwater’s Youth Empowerment programs.
