Our first Paddler Spotlight for our second annual Paddle for Our Hudson is Lori Gross! Lori is a long-time Clearwater volunteer who has been a long-time onland and onboard volunteer, including as a relief cook, Tideline Educator at Eopus Meadows, and Sloop Singer. We spoke with Lori to learn where she paddles and her reasons for participating:
Paddling is my favorite way to connect with nature and honor my place in this crazy web of life. It’s the nearest thing to a religion that I can find.
What’s your goal for the challenge?
I’m hoping to paddle the Black Creek at least once a week this season.
Where are you paddling during the challenge?
How did you first get involved with Clearwater?
I’ve been involved with Clearwater since the late 1980s. I used to volunteer onboard for two weeks a year before I had my daughter. I was also an on-land educator with the program at Esopus Meadows, a relief cook on the boat, a Sloop Singer, and a sign painter for Revival. I’ve organized a bunch of fundraising concerts for Clearwater as well. I still “check in” with Pete and Toshi…when I’m playing my banjo or peeling strawberries.
Paddle for our Hudson is Hudson River Sloop Clearwater’s second annual summer paddle challenge and fundraiser running from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day. Challenging paddlers to complete 20, 60, or 100 miles at their own pace while raising funds to support Hudson River Sloop Clearwater. Learn more about Paddle for Our Hudson.
