Marisa first joined Clearwater this year as a Winter Trainee, drawn by the opportunity to learn carpentry and wooden boat restoration. She continued on as crew into our sailing season, serving as a Deckhand and Educator Trainee sailing with us through mid summer. Marisa reflected, “I loved learning new knots and discovering all the tools in the workshop and bosun’s locker. One of the biggest challenges for me was mastering an eye splice—but I know I’ll get it one day!”

For Marisa, life aboard the Clearwater meant becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable, whether that meant long days, wet weather, or putting new skills into practice and learning from mistakes. Some of her favorite memories are the simple moments of crew life: sharing meals, playing music in the main cabin, and growing alongside shipmates in a supportive environment.

Marisa is grateful to the Clearwater crew for inspiring her to keep pursuing carpentry and sailing, with the dream of one day building sailboats and continuing life aboard tall ships.

For almost 60 years, Clearwater has trained the next generation of shipwrights, sailors, and environmental educators because of the generosity of donors like you. Help us keep the Clearwater magic alive and the sloop sailing for the next generation.
