Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are forever chemicals that can cause increased cholesterol, changes in liver enzymes, increased risk of high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia in pregnant women, and increased risk of kidney and testicular cancer. In 2024, the United States Environmental Protection Agency set federal limits on PFAS in drinking water, and this year it has proposed weakening these protections.
To protect New Yorkers, the Senate and Assembly passed A8634B/S3207B, which, if signed by Governor Hochul, would codify current federal PFAS drinking water standards into New York law, maintain the 2029 compliance deadline, and help ensure New Yorkers are protected from PFAS contamination.
