SUMMARY:Practical Navigator Captain's Course
DESCRIPTION:When: January 12 to January 16\, 2026\, from 8:00 to 5:00 each day\, with a break for lunch\nLocation: Clearwater’s office in Beacon\, NY\nCost: $650  \nWe’re excited to be collaborating with Practical Navigator to offer a 5-day captain’s course in the Hudson Valley this winter for the second year in a row! Kate Enright of Practical Navigator will be teaching the course and will be creating a custom version that caters to sailors and the class audience. Take your sailing to the next level and explore maritime careers as a captain carrying passengers!  We are offering an unbeatable price for an in-person course. \nThe course will prepare you to test for and submit an application to the USCG for an “Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels” (OUPV) license\, commonly known as the “6-pack”\, which allows you to operate vessels with up to six paying passengers\, or a 100 Ton masters license\, dependent your goals. If you want to carry passengers onboard your boat for paid activities—fishing trips\, scenic tours\, diving adventures\, or transportation—you’ll need a captain’s license. \nThe prerequisites include interest\, commitment\, and ability to study online ahead of the class time. Furthermore\, interested students should have the necessary sea time to submit their application within one year from the completion of the course. For an OUPV\, that is 360 Days of sea-time\, with 90 (of the 360) days of sea-time within the last three years. All necessary books and study materials will be provided on loan.  \nA perk of taking a Practical Navigator course is that you get 2 years of free MMSEAS PRO access – they are experts at license applications and can give you 1:1 counseling on the application. This can support students with the licensing process and ensure follow-through and a license in hand! \nThis course can provide a boost to people who have long hoped to pursue a Captain’s license but have been stumped by self-studying. Once completed you can also test through Practical Navigator’s online proctoring\, rather than traveling to a Regional Exam Center.  There are options to continue later in a hybrid format at your own pace for people who would appreciate the attention given to learning material\, then more time for self-study before taking an exam.  \nWe are looking for a minimum sign-up of 6 participants\, maximum 10.  If we don’t make the minimum sign-up in time\, the course will be canceled with a 100% refund for anyone who had signed up. \nFor questions: kate@practicalnavigator.org. \nRequirements for a Captain’s License (OUPV)  \n\n 18 Years of age \n360 Days of sea-time\n90 (of the 360) days of sea-time within the last three years\n•Ability to pass a physical and drug test \n• Ability to acquire a valid CPR/First-Aid certification\n\n  \nAbout Practical Navigator: Practical Navigator Training is designed to present useful navigation topics for professional and recreational mariners in a no-nonsense and accessible way. We are a veteran-owned business started by Captain Chris Nolan\, a former USCG cutterman.  \nAbout Kate: Captain Kate Enright is a maritime educator and tall ship sailor. She has worked all over the world on research boats\, day sailing charters\, and educational programs\, but has spent much of her career working for the Sea Education Association (SEA)\, on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater\, and currently sails as a Captain in Casco Bay\, Maine. Kate holds a USCG 200 Ton NC Master/Auxiliary Sail\, 200 Ton Ocean Mate/Auxiliary Sail license. She received her first license in 2017 through a combination of Practical Navigator classes and testing in Boston.

SUMMARY:Peoples' Meeting: Nuclear Energy is not Green or Clean
DESCRIPTION:Join Onondaga Nation community members\, Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation\, Allies of the Tonawanda Seneca Nation\, Food & Water Watch\, Alliance for a Green Economy\, Nuclear Information and Resource Service\, Citizen Action of New York\, Frack Action\, Syracuse Peace Council\, NY Renews\, and more for a peoples’ meeting on nuclear energy\, the threats it creates\, and the carbon emissions crisis that impacts all our lives. Register to attend. Register to attend. \nWhat: Let’s help the New York State Governor get a clue outside her secret\, exclusionary\, pro-nuclear “2025 Advanced Nuclear NY Summit“: Stop wasting time\, money\, and lives! Climate Justice Now! This event will be an opportunity for everyone to share their voice. If you would like to speak for up to 3 minutes at this event\, you can let us know in the RSVP form. Organizers can help you with preparing talking points in advance.\n\n\nSeptember 30th is also Orange Shirt Day\, a day that commemorates and honors the Indigenous victims and survivors of “residential schools”. Please wear orange to show solidarity with survivors and their families. \n\nWhy: Nuclear energy is a waste of time and money. Mining and nuclear reactors continue to produce toxic waste that poisons land\, water\, air\, and kills and disables people. Instead of nuclear or any other false climate or energy solutions\, we want RENEWABLE energy like solar\, wind and conservation and storage technologies- all of which are faster to build\, cheaper\, and safer than nuclear- which will get New York State and our communities to NY’s Climate Justice Law’s energy and emissions mandates.\n\nRegister to attend.\nDecades of experience demonstrate that nuclear energy is too toxic\, too dangerous\, too expensive\, and too slow to build to be a climate solution. Additionally\, the entire nuclear “cycle” perpetuates environmental injustice. Nuclear power generation is part of a uranium fuel chain which disproportionately impacts Indigenous communities. The process creates highly toxic radioactive waste\, some of which is transported through Onondaga Nation land and directly through the city of Syracuse\, in violation of treaty agreements between the US and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. All nuclear reactors (old and new) must also store waste on-site\, and there is no long-term plan for storing the waste and no safe way to transport it. \nThe organizing groups encourage masking and/or social distancing due to ongoing high levels of COVID-19 among our communities in various regions. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring water\, snacks\, and sunscreen! Bathrooms and water are available across the street at Salt City Market.\n\nRain or shine – we will meet outside the Marriott Syracuse Downtown if the weather is good\, or at the Onondaga County Central Library on Salina Street if the weather is poor.\n\nRegister to attend.\n\nIf you need a ride to this event\, you can check this website to see if any cars are departing from your area. Or if you are driving and would like to offer a ride\, you can add a carpool: https://www.groupcarpool.com/t/vograu\n\nAdditional cosponsors of this event include: Hudson River Sloop Clearwater\, Seneca Lake Guardian\, Zero Waste Ithaca\, Network for a Sustainable Tomorrow\, Three Mile Productions\, Indivisible YorktownNY\, Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition\, and more. \n\n

SUMMARY:A Life in Song: A Tribute to the Life & Legacy of Bill Vanaver in Music & Dance
DESCRIPTION:With full hearts and deep gratitude\, the Bill Vanaver Memorial Fund invites you to a joyful and moving tribute to the life\, music\, and legacy of William “Bill” Vanaver—visionary musician\, folklorist\, beloved teacher\, and co-founder of The Vanaver Caravan. This memorial concert brings together a remarkable gathering of artists\, friends\, and family to honor Bill’s life through the art forms he lived for—story\, song\, dance\, and memory. \nFeaturing performances by Natalie Merchant\, Tom Chapin\, Guy Davis\, David Amram\, Cole Quest & the City Pickers\, Brenda Buffalino\, Matoaka Little Eagle\, Ramona Staffeld\, Joel Hanna\, and more \nBill carried within him an unimaginable wealth of musical knowledge—a global archive housed not in libraries\, but in the strings of his instruments\, the cadence of his voice\, and the sparkle of his spirit. With his passing\, we lost a singular musical soul—but through this Fund\, his legacy lives on. \nIt was Bill’s dying wish that the many cultures and peoples of this world be given the chance to fall in love with music the way he did: deeply\, curiously\, joyfully. The Bill Vanaver Memorial Fund will ensure that his songs—and the songs of future keepers of tradition—continue to be heard. \n\nAll proceeds from this event will support the Fund\, helping carry forward the work Bill held most dear:\nCreating new works and world-class touring performances (including America in Motion and The Nine Muses)\nPreserving and sharing Bill’s vast archive of original and traditional music\nBringing world music and folk traditions into schools and community programs\nSupporting international collaborations and cultural exchange\nProviding scholarships for young musicians and dancers\nFostering intergenerational mentorship in the performing arts\n\nWhether you knew Bill personally\, were moved by his music\, or simply wish to honor a life lived in service of song\, this evening is for you. Let’s gather to sing\, to dance\, and to celebrate a legacy that continues to resonate across generations and cultures.

SUMMARY:Speaker Sail aboard the Clearwater - The Rights of Nature: Reimagining Our Relationship with the Earth
DESCRIPTION:Join environmental advocate\, author\, and founder of the Center of Earth Ethics\, Karenna Gore to explore a growing paradigm shift in how we view the natural world. The idea behind the Rights of Nature is simple but powerful: instead of treating nature only as property\, we recognize natural entities—like rivers\, forests\, and mountains—as being alive\, having agency\, and bearing rights.. In this talk\, Karenna will speak to the history of this novel legal strategy\, and explore what it could mean for the future of environmental protection. The talk is a practical introduction to a growing global movement that’s reshaping how we think about law\, ethics\, and our place in the natural world. \nRegister to attend. \nPlease plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the sail for boarding. All guests should dress for the weather in layers and with sturdy shoes and are recommended to bring sunscreen\, a hat\, a full reusable water bottle\, and any snacks you may need.

SUMMARY:Pete Seeger: Songs & Stories featuring Michael J. Miles & Tony Trischka
DESCRIPTION:Pete Seeger (1919-2014) was a legendary musician and activist. He was Woody Guthrie’s friend\, and used his music to protest for Civil Rights\, for the environment and against the war in Vietnam. For his unflinching efforts\, he was blacklisted and forced to testify before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee. Over his 90+ years\, Pete touched the true heart and soul of America with his songs and his passion for what is right. As an environmental activist\, he founded Hudson River Sloop Clearwater to “build a boat to save the river\,” creating an intergenerational community of Hudson River advocates through education\, sailing\, advocacy\, and music. \nThis event is a benefit fundraiser for Hudson River Sloop Clearwater\, featuring Michael J. Miles and Tony Trischka will be opened by Betty and the Baby Boomers. Miles and Trischka are both world-renowned banjo players who had decades-long relationships with Pete Seeger\, and the Baby Boomers\, consisting of Betty Boomer\, Jean McAvoy\, Paul Rubeo\, Steve Stanne\, and Robert Bard\, came together back in 1987 through their work for Clearwater. \nIn this one-time-only event at the renowned Towne Crier in Beacon\, NY (Pete’s hometown)\, Miles and Trischka will share their music and their stories of personal encounters with Pete Seeger. You can expect some of the best banjo music on planet earth\, along with stories about Pete\, including some of his testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee. The story of Pete Seeger demonstrates over and over his passion for social justice and planet earth. And Pete’s tool of choice for delivering his message was the banjo. \nWe are so grateful to musicians Michael J. Miles\, Tony Trischka\, and Phil Ciganer\, owner of the Towne Crier Cafe\, for collaborating to create this celebration of Clearwater’s founder and benefit concert to support our work to protect the Hudson River. \n \nMichael Miles (R) and Tony Trischka (L) \nAbout the Musicians:\nMICHAEL J. MILES \nImagine the award-winning composer/musician: grows up in Chicago. His Irish family sings with the player-piano\, and talks politics and poetry. His inner jukebox spins with 500 years of pop songs. These songs turn into set lists and a dozen musical documentaries for the stage: including his signature\, “From Senegal To Seeger\,” tracing the wicked story of the banjo’s journey and featuring Pete Seeger’s testimony before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee. \nWhen Pete heard Michael for the first time\, he wrote\, “This is one of the most beautiful recordings I’ve ever heard … it is enough to make me want to learn the banjo all over again.” \nWith banjo or guitar\, as a singer\, actor\, poet\, composer\, storyteller – Miles drew invitations from Marrakesh to Istanbul\, Belfast to Beirut\, with stops at the Smithsonian Institution\, the Kennedy Center\, Chicago’s Symphony Center\, Ravinia Festival\, music festivals and art centers across the U.S. \nA renowned educator and leader\, Miles is past president of International Folk Alliance and former Program Director at the legendary Old Town School of Folk Music\, where his work turned a small folk school into the largest community music school in America. \nRecent releases include “American Bach Revisited\,” Miles’ interpretations of J.S.Bach and “Mississippi River Suite\,” where\, with poetry and composition\, Miles uses the great river to portray a divided nation. Coming later this year is the “Great American Jukebox.” Learn more about Michael Miles.  \nTONY TRISCHKA \nOne of the most influential banjo players in the roots music world\, Tony Trischka has spent over half a century as a consummate banjo artist. His latest release\, “Earl Jam\,” a tribute to his “North Star”\, Earl Scruggs\, has been released to glowing reviews and features Billy Strings\, Molly Tuttle\, Vince Gill and Del McCoury. It was voted Collaborative Recording of the Year (2024) by the IBMA. It was also a Grammy nominee for Bluegrass Album of the Year (2025). \nTony has recorded and performed with Earl Scruggs\, Pete Seeger\, Steve Martin\, Ed Helms\, John Denver\, William S. Burroughs\, The Allman Brothers\, Miley Cyrus and many more. He’s a three-time Grammy nominee and produced Steve Martin’s “Rare Bird Alert\,” featuring Paul McCartney and the Chicks. He was the musical director of the documentary “The Banjo Project\,” which aired on PBS in 2011. Tony has performed multiple times on the Grand Ole Opry\, and made appearances at Carnegie Hall\, The Kennedy Center and Madison Square Garden. \nIn addition to his skills as a composer and performer\, Tony is one of the instrument’s top teachers\, and has created numerous instructional books\, DVDs and CDs. The group has been praised regionally – they “sing and play old-school folk like it was brand spanking new” (Kingston’s Daily Freeman); nationally – “a refreshing reminder of the halcyon days of American folk music” (Sing Out!); and internationally\, with many bookings over decades at Clifden Arts Week\, a long-running festival in Ireland.
