SUMMARY:Practical Navigator Captain’s Course (Jan 11-15\, 2027)
DESCRIPTION:When: January 11 to January 15\, 2026\, from 8:00 to 5:00 each day\, with a break for lunch\nLocation: Hudson River Watershed Alliance\, 36 Saint James Street\, Unit E\, Kingston\, NY 12401 – map\nCost: $735 \nWe’re excited to be collaborating with Practical Navigator to offer a 5-day captain’s course in the Hudson Valley this winter for the third year in a row! Kate Enright of Practical Navigator will be teaching the course and will be creating a custom version that caters to sailors and the class audience. Take your sailing to the next level and explore maritime careers as a captain carrying passengers!  We are offering an unbeatable price for an in-person course. \nThe course will prepare you to test for and submit an application to the USCG for an “Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels” (OUPV) license\, commonly known as the “6-pack”\, which allows you to operate vessels with up to six paying passengers\, or a 100 Ton masters license\, depending on your goals. If you want to carry passengers onboard your boat for paid activities—fishing trips\, scenic tours\, diving adventures\, or transportation—you’ll need a captain’s license. \nPrerequisites include interest\, commitment\, and the ability to study online before class. Furthermore\, interested students should have the necessary sea time to submit their application within one year from the completion of the course. For an OUPV\, that is 360 Days of sea time\, with 90 (of the 360) days of sea time within the last three years. All necessary books and study materials will be provided on loan. \nA perk of taking a Practical Navigator course is that you get 2 years of free MMSEAS PRO access – they are experts at license applications and can give you 1:1 counseling on the application. This can support students with the licensing process and ensure follow-through and a license in hand! \nThis course can provide a boost to people who have long hoped to pursue a Captain’s license but have been stumped by self-studying. Once completed\, you can also test through Practical Navigator’s online proctoring\, rather than traveling to a Regional Exam Center.  There are options to continue later in a hybrid format at your own pace for people who would appreciate the attention given to learning material\, then more time for self-study before taking an exam. \nWe are looking for a minimum sign-up of 6 participants\, maximum 10.  If we don’t make the minimum sign-up in time\, the course will be canceled with a 100% refund for anyone who had signed up. \nFor questions: kate@practicalnavigator.org \nREGISTER TO ATTEND \nRequirements for a Captain’s License (OUPV)  \n\n18 Years of age\n360 Days of sea-time\n90 (of the 360) days of sea-time within the last three years\n•Ability to pass a physical and drug test\n• Ability to acquire a valid CPR/First-Aid certification\n\nAbout Practical Navigator: Practical Navigator Training is designed to present useful navigation topics for professional and recreational mariners in a no-nonsense and accessible way. We are a veteran-owned business started by Captain Chris Nolan\, a former USCG cutterman. \nAbout Kate: Captain Kate Enright is a maritime educator and tall ship sailor. She has worked all over the world on research boats\, day sailing charters\, and educational programs\, but has spent much of her career working for the Sea Education Association (SEA)\, on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater\, and currently sails as a Captain in Casco Bay\, Maine. Kate holds a USCG 200 Ton NC Master/Auxiliary Sail\, 200 Ton Ocean Mate/Auxiliary Sail license. She received her first license in 2017 through a combination of Practical Navigator classes and testing in Boston.

Oozing soul\, her voice bleeds with emotion and gratitude\, while simple piano melodies and upbeat percussion fill you with appreciation and love for the people around us who fight for change.” Crys Matthews is an award-winning singer-songwriter and social justice advocate known for blending Country\, Americana\, Folk\, Blues\, and Bluegrass into a bold\, socially conscious sound. Crys is a daughter of the South by way of Nashville now and North Carolina forever. She is the self-proclaimed poster child of intersectionality. Matthews\, in her new album Reclamation\, sings social justice music right alongside ‘traditional’ Country and Americana music. Her purpose: to use her music to amplify marginalized voices and challenge systemic inequities. \nThis is what the American Society of Composers\, Authors and Publishers says about Matthews\, her writing\, performance\, and delivery: “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice\, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times.” Just what we need! SUMMARY:March Walkabout Clearwater Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Clearwater Walkabout Chorus for their March 21 Coffeehouse featuring Mustard’s Retreat. *Please note\, shows are now matinees with doors at 2:30pm\, followed by Teachabout at 2:45pm\, and the featured performance at 3:30pm. \nReserve a $30 ticket ahead of time and pay at the door by check\, cash\, or credit card upon arrival at the event\, or purchase a ticket at the door for $35. Student tickets are $10 with presentation of a valid student ID. Children under 6 are free. Reserve your ticket. \nAbout Mustard’s Retreat\nMustard’s Retreat has for decades been delighting audiences as raconteurs\, storytellers\, and accomplished musicians (vocals\, guitars\, dulcimer\, electric bass\, mandolin\, harmonica\, pennywhistle). David Tamulevich & Libby Glover have always sung the songs they enjoyed and cared about. In every performance\, they simply are themselves\, delighting in and connecting with their audiences as if they were family. \nMustard’s Retreat does not give a formal ”performance”. A sharing of songs and experience is what happens when they are on stage. Their songs can be traditional\, contemporary\, or their own compositions. Regardless of type\, the audience is invited into their world and is drawn closer together. It is music for real people about real things- life\, love\, sex and death- the big stuff- and the songs have entered the lexicon of “ anonymous” folk songs and are being passed from hand to hand- which is the ultimate tribute to a songwriter. They came of age in the 60s\, at the confluence of Pete Seeger\, Peter\, Paul & Mary\, Bob Dylan and the singer/songwriter revolution. They care much more about what they do and stand for and finding that common ground with the audience than fame or money. Garnet Rogers commented that “Mustard’s Retreat stands out as the real thing: Writing to make sense of their lives\, helping us to make sense of ours\, sharing much\, talking little\, trying to find the most graceful path and being able to laugh at the inevitable stumbles and head bumps along the way. “Mustard’s Retreat puts the fun in folk! \nTheir most recent album\, By Request (2024) Duo album with Libby Glover. Reimagining old favorites and requests from fans. \nThey’ve traveled more than a million miles and performed more than 7\,500 shows\, from pig roasts and pool parties to Lincoln Center Out of Doors\, The Barns at Wolf Trap and the Kennedy’s Center’s Millennium Stage. Audiences never leave any other way than uplifted\, consoled\, and happy. SUMMARY:April Walkabout Clearwater Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Clearwater Walkabout Chorus for their April 10 Coffeehouse featuring Holly Near. *Please note\, this is an EVENING SHOW with doors at 6:30pm\, followed by Teachabout at 6:45pm\, and the featured performance at 7:30pm. \nReserve a $35 ticket ahead of time and pay at the door by check\, cash\, or credit card upon arrival at the event\, or purchase a ticket at the door for $40. Children under 6 are free. Reserve your ticket. \nAbout Holly Near \n“I do not separate my music from my heart nor do I separate my ideas from my daily life. I open myself up to learning as much as I can about humanity and this mysterious life experience\, but I do not relate to political work as a series of ’causes.’ Moment by moment\, I integrate what I learn into my personal life\, personalizing my politics. It is from this personal place that I write my songs.” – Holly Near \nSinging was part of Holly from the beginning as she sang along with recordings of some of the world’s great singers. Holly attended UCLA for a few short months\, but she was nabbed by agents and drawn into the world of film and television. (Yes\, she was on The Partridge Family). She even performed for a short run in Hair on Broadway. Her unique and recognizable voice turned her to singing full time\, as a soloist as well as sharing the stage with her sisters Laurel and Timothy. Throughout her career\, she has enjoyed collaborations with such artists as Mercedes Sosa\, Ronnie Gilbert\, Inti Illimani\, Emma’s Revolution\, and her long-time songwriting partner\, the late Jeff Langley. In the 1970’s her introduction to global feminism had her crossing paths with lesbian feminist performers such as Meg Christian\, Cris Williamson\, Linda Tillery\, Mary Watkins\, and Alive! Her view of life was expanded as she tried to understand the depth of sexism and homophobia. Of course she turned the lessons she learned into song. \n“As a songwriter\, she turns big experiences into personal stories. In response to the slaughter of the students at Kent State\, she wrote It Could Have Been Me. And following the assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk in San Francisco\, she penned Singing For Our Lives. The chilling disappearance of people in Chile under the Pinochet dictatorship brought forth Hay Una Mujer Desaparecida to commemorate the women who had “been disappeared.” \nShe has been recognized by various justice organizations\, including the ACLU\, the National Organization of Women\, and Ms Magazine. (She is a recipient of the Women of the Year awarded by Ms Magazine). She has been nominated for Grammys as well as the Legends of Women’s Music Award. \nIn 2019\, Holly began a website project called Because of a Song\, an online historic archive that documents some of the influential artists that rose from the feminist lesbian music scene in Oakland\, California. The site can be viewed at www.becauseofasong.com. \nHer unique and recognizable voice in confluence with her commitment to human rights and political justice makes an evening of her music unforgettable. Visit Holly Near’s website. \nAbout Walkabout Clearwater Chorus + Coffeehouse\nWalkabout is The Walkabout Clearwater Chorus is dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and social action through song and education.
