SUMMARY:Peoples' Meeting: Nuclear Energy is not Green or Clean
DESCRIPTION:Join Onondaga Nation community members\, Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation\, Allies of the Tonawanda Seneca Nation\, Food & Water Watch\, Alliance for a Green Economy\, Nuclear Information and Resource Service\, Citizen Action of New York\, Frack Action\, Syracuse Peace Council\, NY Renews\, and more for a peoples’ meeting on nuclear energy\, the threats it creates\, and the carbon emissions crisis that impacts all our lives. Register to attend. Register to attend. \nWhat: Let’s help the New York State Governor get a clue outside her secret\, exclusionary\, pro-nuclear “2025 Advanced Nuclear NY Summit“: Stop wasting time\, money\, and lives! Climate Justice Now! This event will be an opportunity for everyone to share their voice. If you would like to speak for up to 3 minutes at this event\, you can let us know in the RSVP form. Organizers can help you with preparing talking points in advance.\n\n\nSeptember 30th is also Orange Shirt Day\, a day that commemorates and honors the Indigenous victims and survivors of “residential schools”. Please wear orange to show solidarity with survivors and their families. \n\nWhy: Nuclear energy is a waste of time and money. Mining and nuclear reactors continue to produce toxic waste that poisons land\, water\, air\, and kills and disables people. Instead of nuclear or any other false climate or energy solutions\, we want RENEWABLE energy like solar\, wind and conservation and storage technologies- all of which are faster to build\, cheaper\, and safer than nuclear- which will get New York State and our communities to NY’s Climate Justice Law’s energy and emissions mandates.\n\nRegister to attend.\nDecades of experience demonstrate that nuclear energy is too toxic\, too dangerous\, too expensive\, and too slow to build to be a climate solution. Additionally\, the entire nuclear “cycle” perpetuates environmental injustice. Nuclear power generation is part of a uranium fuel chain which disproportionately impacts Indigenous communities. The process creates highly toxic radioactive waste\, some of which is transported through Onondaga Nation land and directly through the city of Syracuse\, in violation of treaty agreements between the US and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. All nuclear reactors (old and new) must also store waste on-site\, and there is no long-term plan for storing the waste and no safe way to transport it. \nThe organizing groups encourage masking and/or social distancing due to ongoing high levels of COVID-19 among our communities in various regions. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring water\, snacks\, and sunscreen! Bathrooms and water are available across the street at Salt City Market.\n\nRain or shine – we will meet outside the Marriott Syracuse Downtown if the weather is good\, or at the Onondaga County Central Library on Salina Street if the weather is poor.\n\nRegister to attend.\n\nIf you need a ride to this event\, you can check this website to see if any cars are departing from your area. Or if you are driving and would like to offer a ride\, you can add a carpool: https://www.groupcarpool.com/t/vograu\n\nAdditional cosponsors of this event include: Hudson River Sloop Clearwater\, Seneca Lake Guardian\, Zero Waste Ithaca\, Network for a Sustainable Tomorrow\, Three Mile Productions\, Indivisible YorktownNY\, Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition\, and more. \n\n

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Hello Boats! Get to know a handful of vessels dedicated to the Hudson River
DESCRIPTION:6/23 Update: Hello Boats has been postponed\, and will not take place on June 26 as planned. Keep an eye out for a new date later this summer. \n———————————- \nJoin us for a rare and exciting riverside gathering featuring four iconic vessels with a purpose\, The Bob Boyle\, Apollonia\, Clearwater and M/V Haendel for a special evening of exploration\, education\, and celebration on the Hudson River. Bring a picnic\, enjoy the riverfront\, and tour the boats\, and explore the unique efforts of each vessel and organization. Free and family-friendly (ages 5+). \nAbout the boats: \nApollonia\nLaunched in 2020\, the schooner Apollonia is bringing sail freight back to the Hudson River\, channeling the power of wind\, tide\, muscle\, and traditional knowledge to move locally-sourced\, shelf-stable products.  With each voyage\, the Apolloina and crew create new connections across diverse riverfront communities and work toward a more resilient future. \nThe Bob Boyle\nLaunched in 2024\, the Bob Boyle is Riverkeeper’s newest boat and scientific research vessel\, allowing for the expansion of the organization’s river-wide water quality monitoring program. The Boyle is named for Riverkeeper founder\, Robert H. Boyle (1928-2017)\, an investigative journalist\, avid outdoorsman\, environmental activist\, and author. \nClearwater\nLaunched in 1969\, the sloop Clearwater is recognized as America’s Environmental Flagship. Over its nearly 60 years on the Hudson River over half a million students\, families\, advocates\, and community members have ventured aboard the Clearwater to experience the river first-hand\, learning about and taking action to protect the Hudson River. \nHaendel\nBuilt in 1965\, Haendel was originally a survey boat for the US Army Corp of Engineers. She has lived many lives (including being owned by the state of VT!) and now works as a ferry and sightseeing boat connecting the river communities of Hudson\, Athens\, Catskill and Coxsackie.

SUMMARY:Beacon Sloop Club Winter Lecture Series: God Bless Benedict Arnold - The True Story of America's Most Hated Man with Jack Kelly
DESCRIPTION:This spring marks the 250th anniversary of the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The Hudson River and Champlain Valley were the scene of critical events in that conflict and played an even bigger role in the career of Benedict Arnold. \nThe True Story of America’s Most Hated Man gives an eye opening account of both the undeniable heroism of Arnold’s early efforts for the patriot cause and his precipitous fall from grace. The combination has made him one of the most interesting figures of the Revolution. \nJoin the Beacon Sloop Club to learn from award-winning historian and novelist\, Jack Kelly\, who will share an eye-opening account of both the undeniable heroism of Arnold’s early efforts for the patriot cause and his precipitous fall from grace. \nLearn more about the talk or the Beacon Sloop Club.
