SUMMARY:Hudson River Sloop Clearwater's 2026 Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Clearwater’s 2026 Annual Member Meeting will take place on Saturday\, October 17 from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Hudson River Maritime Musuem Barn in Kingston. Current membership is required to attend the Annual Meeting. To check your membership status\, email Laura Freeman\, Donor Relations Coordinator\, at laura@clearwater.org. \nAnnual Meeting is free and open to all current Clearwater members\, though prior registration is required and will open in late August. Register to attend. \nMeet Clearwater’s staff and board and hear what the organization has been up to and has planned for the short and long term. In Clearwater tradition\, the meeting will feature a potluck lunch and music. Please bring a dish to share and ideally your own cup\, plate\, and utensils. \nAdditionally\, Board of Directors election results will be announced during the meeting. Ballots will be sent out in mid-September. \nPublic parking is available surrounding the Maritime Museum. If you plan to travel from NYC to Kingston for the Annual Meeting\, we suggest the 7am Trailways bus from Port Authority\, which will arrive in Kingston at 9:10am. The best departing bus will leave Kingston at 3pm and arrive back to Port Authority by 5:30pm. We will be offering a shuttle to and from the Kingston Trailways Bus Station. DESCRIPTION:Join the Beacon Sloop Club for their Annual Pumpkin Festival! Enjoy two solar-powered music stages\, one dedicated to young folks (children)\, featuring live music throughout the day. Numerous food and craft vendors will be on hand. Environmental non-profits will feature displays of local river history and the environment\, including information about their organization. Families can enjoy many free activities for children in addition to the dedicated children’s stage. \nGuests can enjoy the day surrounded by the majestic Hudson River. \nThe Beacon Sloop Club’s boat\, the Woody Guthrie\, will be taking guests on free sails from the Beacon Harbor\, weather permitting. The public may sign up for an afternoon sail to relax and experience the beauty\, power\, and grandeur of the Hudson. Sign up at the Beacon Sloop Club table starting at noon. \nThe Beacon Sloop Club is an all-volunteer and non-profit organization. The Beacon Sloop Club’s Festivals raise money for the public sailing program on the Woody Guthrie and other environmental education programs. There is never a charge for sailing aboard the Woody Guthrie. \nThe Beacon Sloop Club meets the first Friday of each month at the clubhouse in Beacon for a potluck dinner\, business meeting\, and live music. Their relationship dates back to when they hosted back-to-back radio shows on WDET-FM\, Detroit. In performing together\, they discovered a friendship based in mutual respect and a love for traditional American music. \nFor Matt and Robert\, American Roots Music (Folk\, Blues\, Spirituals\, Work Songs\, Chants\, etc.) is “Music that Matters”. Currently\, he is based in Ithaca\, New York\, and tours extensively around the U.S.\, Canada\, and Ireland. Reserve your ticket. \nAbout Mustard’s Retreat\nMustard’s Retreat has for decades been delighting audiences as raconteurs\, storytellers\, and accomplished musicians (vocals\, guitars\, dulcimer\, electric bass\, mandolin\, harmonica\, pennywhistle). David Tamulevich & Libby Glover have always sung the songs they enjoyed and cared about. In every performance\, they simply are themselves\, delighting in and connecting with their audiences as if they were family. \nMustard’s Retreat does not give a formal ”performance”. A sharing of songs and experience is what happens when they are on stage. Their songs can be traditional\, contemporary\, or their own compositions. Regardless of type\, the audience is invited into their world and is drawn closer together. It is music for real people about real things- life\, love\, sex and death- the big stuff- and the songs have entered the lexicon of “ anonymous” folk songs and are being passed from hand to hand- which is the ultimate tribute to a songwriter. They came of age in the 60s\, at the confluence of Pete Seeger\, Peter\, Paul & Mary\, Bob Dylan and the singer/songwriter revolution. They care much more about what they do and stand for and finding that common ground with the audience than fame or money. Children under 6 are free. Reserve your ticket. \nAbout Holly Near \n“I do not separate my music from my heart nor do I separate my ideas from my daily life. I open myself up to learning as much as I can about humanity and this mysterious life experience\, but I do not relate to political work as a series of ’causes.’ Moment by moment\, I integrate what I learn into my personal life\, personalizing my politics. It is from this personal place that I write my songs.” – Holly Near \nSinging was part of Holly from the beginning as she sang along with recordings of some of the world’s great singers. Holly attended UCLA for a few short months\, but she was nabbed by agents and drawn into the world of film and television. (Yes\, she was on The Partridge Family). She even performed for a short run in Hair on Broadway. Her unique and recognizable voice turned her to singing full time\, as a soloist as well as sharing the stage with her sisters Laurel and Timothy. Throughout her career\, she has enjoyed collaborations with such artists as Mercedes Sosa\, Ronnie Gilbert\, Inti Illimani\, Emma’s Revolution\, and her long-time songwriting partner\, the late Jeff Langley. In the 1970’s her introduction to global feminism had her crossing paths with lesbian feminist performers such as Meg Christian\, Cris Williamson\, Linda Tillery\, Mary Watkins\, and Alive! Her view of life was expanded as she tried to understand the depth of sexism and homophobia. Of course she turned the lessons she learned into song. \n“As a songwriter\, she turns big experiences into personal stories. In response to the slaughter of the students at Kent State\, she wrote It Could Have Been Me. And following the assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk in San Francisco\, she penned Singing For Our Lives. The chilling disappearance of people in Chile under the Pinochet dictatorship brought forth Hay Una Mujer Desaparecida to commemorate the women who had “been disappeared.” \nShe has been recognized by various justice organizations\, including the ACLU\, the National Organization of Women\, and Ms Magazine. (She is a recipient of the Women of the Year awarded by Ms Magazine). She has been nominated for Grammys as well as the Legends of Women’s Music Award. \nIn 2019\, Holly began a website project called Because of a Song\, an online historic archive that documents some of the influential artists that rose from the feminist lesbian music scene in Oakland\, California. Reserve your ticket. \nAbout Tom Chapin\nTOM CHAPIN’s remarkable musicianship\, great songwriting\, and personal warmth shine through in his many award-winning recordings and videos\, but especially in his concerts\, which are special experiences for young and old alike. Known for his ABC children’s show Make-A-Wish and his children’s albums\, Chapin is also the younger brother of late folk singer/songwriter and humanitarian Harry Chapin. A fixture on the American folk music circuit\, he has frequently performed with Pete Seeger\, Holly Near\, Peter Yarrow\, Judy Collins\, and David Amram. His career spans five decades and over 25 albums. Tom has been recognized with three Grammy awards for Mama Don’t Allow\, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly and The Train They Call the City of New Orleans.
