Ever since, Seeger's 106-foot-long sloop, Clearwater, has been sailing up and down the Hudson River to educate and inspire children to protect the environment.
We went along for a 3-hour voyage with middle school students from Newburgh, New York. While enjoying the majestic views of the Hudson Valley, children learned first-hand about pollution, water quality, and their favorite: eels
To date more than a half million people have set sail on the sloop, about 1,200 students every year.
Clearwater also worked tirelessly to pass the Clean Water Act of 1972, a federal assault on pollution. Its efforts turned the Hudson from a garbage dump for factories into a river you can now swim and fish in.
After Seeger's death in January, Peter Gross became the new helm of Clearwater as its executive director. He says the group's slogan is "No child left inside."
Seeger had a simple plan when he commissioned the sloop: Build a boat to save the river. 45 years later, the river is not only cleaner but the future now looks brighter for generations of environmentalists to come.

Police in the Seneca County village of Waterloo tell local media that they were called to a home Wednesday afternoon by a neighbor who noticed the 3-year-old and his 4-year-old brother unattended in her backyard. When officers arrived, the boys' father had caught up with his 4-year-old son but the younger boy was nowhere to be seen.

A new Marist College poll finds most Americans say it doesn't take a lot of money to be stylish. The nationwide poll by the Hudson Valley college found 86 percent of respondents said it was possible to be stylish on a limited budget. The other 14 percent agreed with the statement that it's only possible to have good style with a lot of money. The poll also found that 68 percent of Americans think we focus too much on fashion.

New York ranks among the top five states for children's health, according to the 25th edition of the Kids Count Data Book released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The report released Tuesday looks at data from 1990 that show the major trends in child well-being, and recent trends that compare data from 2005 to 2012. New York showed improvement in all eight categories of health and education for children.
