Hudson River PCB Internet References

There are dozens, probably hundreds of websites dealing with polychlorinated biphenyls and their treatment. The sites listed below are just a starting point, but represent a number of differing legislative, corporate, advocate, and scientific viewpoints.

EPA Hudson River PCBs - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s site contains background information on PCBs in general, the history of the Hudson River case, maps and photos, and additional information.

Clearwater Hudson River PCB Pollution Timeline - A detailed chronology of the history of PCBs in the Hudson River and steps that have been taken to address the problems. Other Hudson-based groups like Scenic Hudson and Riverkeeper may have somewhat similar information on their websites.

General Electric - General Electric provides a lot of information about the history and benefits of PCBs, as well as ongoing remediation efforts that GE is pursuing. Details about the dredging plan are hard to find.

Poughkeepsie Journal - PCBs and the Hudson River - Feature articles from the Poughkeepsie Journal, includes a photo gallery.

Hudson River Foundation - The HRF was originally founded as a scientific organization funded by polluter penalties. They published a PCB report based on a number of informed “neutral” scientific opinions and studies.

Natural Resources Defense Council - Healing the Hudson - NRDC uses law, science, and the support of more than 500,000 members nationwide to protect the planet’s wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things.

Property Rights Foundation of America, Inc. - A national organization that advocates “the fundamental right to own and use private property.” Basically anti-dredging, pro-minimal government involvement.

Science Library - PCBs and the Hudson River - Clearing house of information, websites, and bibliographies. A good reference site to know in general.

EPA - Superfund - As well as being linked to specific PCB pages, the EPA gives background to Superfund sites and priorities.

Sierra Club - Superfund - The Sierra Club takes an advocacy role is support of the Superfund, listing the club’s findings on potential threats, financial struggles, and legal ramifications
