Background

Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit grassroots environmental organization of 4,500 members founded in 1966 by legendary folksinger and social activist Pete Seeger, who launched the effort to “build a boat to save the river”. Over more than three decades, Pete’s original concept has grown into an innovative template for environmental education and grassroots advocacy replicated by organizations around the world.

Clearwater’s strategy combines educational programming, environmental advocacy, and celebration to protect the natural environment of our river valley and enhance the quality of life for the citizens of the Hudson River watershed. Our mission is to restore, preserve, and protect the Hudson River, its watershed, and the communities along its shores through science-based education, citizen action, and community outreach.

Basic Job Functions

Major tasks of the Onboard Education Coordinators (2) include overseeing and teaching three-hour programs aboard the Clearwater to participants ranging from third grade to adults.

Along with training crew and weekly volunteers in regards to curriculum, maintaining educational supplies and equipment, and administrative office duties are required. The OEC’s serve as the primary contact for participating groups aboard Clearwater as well as a vital spokesperson and representative of the organization.

Onboard the vessel the OEC is a vital part of the onboard community and helps foster a sense of environmental stewardship with the weekly volunteers and the crew.

During the off-season (November-March) the OEC is based at the Clearwater office in Poughkeepsie NY and works to recruit volunteers and high school age youth for extended summer programs. As part of these programs the OEC is also responsible for creating training materials with which to prepare the onboard crew and weekly volunteers in program delivery.

Additional off-season responsibilities include care and maintenance of educational materials, ordering supplies and preparing materials for the up coming season. Working with the Education Director to develop relationships with schools, hire seasonal education interns, and an array of other projects.

During the sailing season the boat travels to towns along the Hudson River from NYC to Albany. The OEC is a partial residential position, living aboard the vessel every other week so personal housing is a must along with a reliable source of transportation and valid drivers license.

The OEC is directly responsible for the implementation of the educational programming aboard. This includes all necessary program preparation including crew and volunteer training and ensuring pre-trip contact with participant organizations. Working closely with the Captain and Chief Mate, the OEC establishes the daily schedule so that both the operational and educational needs of the vessel are being met.

For day sail programs, the OEC directly supervises the crew and volunteers in the delivery of station-based learning modules and ensures that the day’s programming objectives are being met. Prior to the arrival of the program participants, the OEC briefs the crew on the day’s program, sets up the educational materials that are needed for the day, and then serves as the first point of contact with the students when they arrive.

On multi-day programs, the OEC’s. work together to create a program itinerary and then ensures that any necessary shore components are arranged. Again they are the primary contact person with the participant organization prior to departure.

Over the course of two weeks, the OEC works seven days on the boat, three days in the office and four days off. Office time is used to coordinate volunteers, visit schools, teach at Clearwater’s on-land programs, and other duties as needed.
