Fun Fish Fact #4

Growing never grows old Generally speaking, fish never stop growing as long as they have access to enough food. Most growth happens when they are young; the pace of growth slows as they age. Scientists call this “indeterminate growth.” Among the smallest of Hudson River fish found in this key are sticklebacks and gobies (about 2 inches long). The largest fish in the Hudson, at over eight feet, is the Atlantic sturgeon. One caught in Canada was 14 feet long and weighed 800 pounds! Larger and older fish also tend to produce more eggs. A large sturgeon’s “caviar” may contain over 8 million eggs!
