Volunteer Committee Descriptions

NOTE: The number of hours indicated is the total commitment required. As
a rule, this is divided into 2 or more shifts. Shift schedules are made
by each individual coordinator. Ask your coordinator for particular
shift arrangements.
*It is essential that our volunteers fulfill their weekend commitment. With the exception of unforeseen emergencies, if you do not fulfill your 2012 volunteer commitment, we won’t be able to accommodate you in the future.
Access: 10 hrs/13+ years - Assist people with disabilities in a variety
of situations. Read signs, maintain access areas.
Requires: ability to push
wheelchair over rough terrain, sense of humor, ability to work
extensively with the public, commitment to teamwork.
Advantages: most of the work takes place at the performance stages.
Activists: 10 hrs/18+ years - Help coordinators to lay out booth spaces,
welcome and help groups in setting up their spots, provide info about
activists & Clearwater, encourage Clearwater membership, keep the area
tidy, break down on Sunday evening.
Requires: Positive attitude, caring,
helpful, informed.
Audience Camping: - 10 hrs, 16+ yrs - Greet and register arriving campers, maintain park rules in regard to parking and fires, help to ensure that campers return next year with family and friends. Requires: Positive helpful attitude, sense of humor and awareness of park rules. Must be willing to cheerfully start at 7am on Saturday morning.
Before & After: 12 hrs/15+ years - Set up and take down banners, poles &
displays, deliver and collect tables & chairs, assist as needed with
signs.
Requires: physically fit. Shifts start at 9am Friday. There may
be some work Saturday morning plus on-call availability. 8am-noon Monday
Pickup truck a plus! Friday & Monday meals with Site Crew.
Box Office, (Ticket Sales): 10 hrs/18+ years - Sell & process ticket
sales in Box Office.
Requires: alert, reliable, honest, cordial (first
contact with audience). Coordinator reserves the right of approval on
all volunteers.
Clearwater Store: 10 hrs/16+ years - Volunteers check in/out performer
merchandise, stock & oversee tables of merchandise, assist customers and
check out customer purchases. Retail experience and knowledge of Clearwater helpful.
Checkout crew is chosen pre-festival. There are only a couple of openings for this
crew. If you are interested please make a note on your application.
Childrens Area: 10 hrs/18+ years - Assist in supervising a diversity of
childrens activities.
Requires: Enjoy playing with kids. Advantages:
playing with kids!
Communications: 12 hrs/18+ years - The central nervous system of Revival,
working around the clock with radios, pagers & phones, to keep key
personnel connected and information flowing. Must enjoy working with
people. Special incentives to work night shifts.
Clearwater Education Committee (Tideline and Discovery Tents): 10 hrs/14+ years - Requires some display assembly, interpret fish tanks and other exhibits, ability to talk with the public, basic knowledge of Hudson River ecology or willingness to learn.
Drinking Water: One 2.5-hour & one 3-hour shift each day/16+ years -
Selling water.
Requires: awareness of hygienic food handling, confident
in simple math, reliable in handling money.
Electrical Crew: 8-10 hrs, depending on day/18+ years -
This committee brings the electric power to the festival. The committees job is to lay down
the cables from the access points to the place where it is needed as well as install any
necessary distribution boxes. After the festival we also pick up cables and boxes, clean
them off, and pack them away until next year.
Requires: some heavy lifting, lots of walking, lots of hand work,
some working on heights and overhead.
Environmental Action: 10 hrs/ 16+ years - Build displays before, staff
area during festival. Training provided for effective outreach on
watershed protection, energy efficiency & renewables, closing Indian
Point & other related Environmental issues.
Festival Fabrics: 18+ years old - Two options: a) Create and maintain
stage backdrops and banners in advance of the festival weekend. Requires
flexible advance commitment time and design/textile skills; b) On-site
volunteer time (12 hours) requires set-up on Thursday or Friday before
the festival, occasional availability during (for adjustments as
necessary) and take-down on Monday.
Required on-site skills: physical
flexibility and familiarity with tools.
First Aid: EMT needed for times when Westchester Hospital contractors
are not on-site: Friday Noon-10pm, on-call (i.e., stay on-site) Friday
night and Sunday morning.
Requires: EMT license, cellphone.
Food Vendor Support: 10 hrs/18+ years - Help food vendors with specific needs during the festival, making sure all prices are clearly marked and displayed, dispensing of ice from the truck to vendors, and keeping track of bags sold, checking to make sure site is tidy and trash and recycling are put in appropriate containers, supervising cleanup on Sunday evening.
Grassroots Marketing: 12 hrs/ 16+ years - Preparing and implementing grassroots marketing work to promote the festival. All the work on this committee will be done in advance of the festival. Some volunteers will be asked to come in to the Clearwater office. Requires: Computer and Internet experience, with social media experience a plus. All the work of this committee will be done before the festival.
Green Living Expo: 10 hrs/18+ years - Assist exhibitors as needed to set
up on Friday & Saturday morning. Assist Expo coordinator with
registration and hospitality. Breakdown & cleanup on Sunday evening.
Info Booth: 10 hrs/18+ years - Give directions; answer questions about festival & Clearwater; Lost & Found.
Requires: Helpful attitude, sense of humor. Knowledge of region a bonus.
Member Action: 10 hrs/18+ years - Sign up new & renewing members, provide hospitality & information, sign up folks for sails (handle cash and credit cards). Requires: Familiar with Clearwater programs; friendly, organized, outgoing and reliable. Hours available before & after the festival, for setup & breakdown.
Peacekeeping - Click here for IMPORTANT scheduling information: 8-9 hrs,
depending on assignment/18+ years - No parents with small children.
Traffic & crowd management, audience assistance & information, and
facility security. Requires: a mature, calm, responsible individual. Many
assignments require extensive walking or driving a golf cart. Shifts
occur from Friday morning (7:30am) through Sunday evening (11pm). AFTER

Performer Hospitality: 10 hrs/15+ years - Prepare & maintain cabins.
Staff the Performer Reception, Green Room, instrument lock-up and hospitality area. Must be willing to be flexible with shift scheduling and additional hours as needed.
Requires: Good humor, high energy and a team attitude!
Performer Transportation: 10hrs/20+ years - Transport people & equipment
on-site & off, to airports & housing.
Requires: experienced, licensed
driver; use own insured vehicle.
Preferred: large vehicles and those
that are available Friday before and Monday after the festival.
Pre-Festival Office Support: 12 hrs/16+ years - Work in the Clearwater
office before the festival weekend. Ticket orders on phone, mailings,
filing, errands, packing, etc.
Requires: good phone skills, flexible
hours. Volunteer Coordinator has particular need for super-reliable data
entry.
Reception: 14 hours (7 hrs Friday, 4 hrs Saturday, 3 hrs Sunday) Greet
& check-in arriving volunteers, vendors and activists.
Requires: people
skills & patience, ability to learn the system quickly, and stamina.
Must work Friday. Volunteers under 18 must have supervision and be
approved by the coordinator.
Zero Waste (formerly known as Litter Picking / Recycling):
10 hrs/12+ years, families with children welcome - As a part of the effort to move closer to the Festival's ideal of Zero Waste, this committee will have three roles for 2012:
- Staff collection sites - help sorting material so the right stuff goes in the right bins and call for pickups when bins / bags full.
- Litter picking - collect items from the festival grounds, help to keep festival site clean.
- Ambassadors for Zero Waste - provide public outreach and education to help Festival attendees understand our practices and goals with the intention of increasing Zero Waste behavior beyond the Festival.
Shore Support: 8-10 hrs/18+ years - Volunteers assist in the
operation of the launch boat that takes people out to the Clearwater for
sailing rides. This work occurs at the working waterfront area.
Requires: physical
vigor, not necessarily great strength.
Signpainting: 12 hrs/16+ years - Set up on Wednesday. Thursday and
Friday; paint signs in large, pleasant on-site workspace - help clean
up and distribute signs around the site, assist with installation as
needed, and breakdown on Monday.
Requires: skill with brush lettering &
layout, and/or skill with tools for installation.
Site Crew: 32 hrs/20+ years - Flexible hours, 2 weeks before & 1 week
after. Camp or commute, meals provided. Many kinds of work, from
building stages & booths to painting and snowfencing.
Requires: physical
vigor, not necessarily great strength.
Sloop Clubs: 10 hrs - Discuss and support Sloop Club and Clearwater
objectives with festival participants. Selection of volunteers and
scheduling done by each club. Please indicate in the comments field
which club you propose to represent.
Stage Sound: 10 hrs/15+ years - Assist sound company with load-in and
load-out of sound equipment.
Requires: physical labor with heavy
lifting, and availability Friday 12:30pm to 6pm and Sunday 7pm to
Midnight.
Ticket Taking: 10 hrs/14+ years - Welcome audience, take tickets & attach
wristbands at Rainbow Gate. Help to maintain gate security.
Vendor Support: 10 hrs/18+ years - Help vendors set up Friday; support
during festival; assist with breakdown Sunday night.
Requires: arrival
Thursday evening.
Volunteer Hospitality: 10 hrs/18+ years - Greet & assist new arrivals in
Volunteer Camping; monitor facilities; help set up for Acoustic Jam
party in Kitchawan Lodge.
Requires: be ready to work when volunteers
start rolling in on Friday mid-day.
Volunteer Food, (Kitchen Crew): 10 hrs/16+ years - Prepare, deliver &
serve food in lodge kitchen and field tent. Clean prep areas and dining
tables.
Working Waterfront: 8-10 hrs/18+ years - Volunteers assist in the operating area of the Working Waterfront during four-hour watches each day. Requires: A strong background in small rowing, paddling, and sailing boat operation and safety. Emergency medical care skills would be an added qualification, as would be knowledge of marine radio operation. * Preference is given to volunteers who have been with Working Waterfront in the past. However, frequent openings exist. Applicants will be interviewed by telephone or e-mail before acceptance.
