Youth Internship

YWH3WHAT IS THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM?

Clearwater’s Internship Program immerses participants in sailing, teaching, team-building and everyday tasks that make Clearwater function as classroom, a boat, and a home. This program offers a challenging, enjoyable and educational opportunity to people who may not otherwise have this chance. Participants will gain experience in scientific sampling, boat handling, public speaking, ropework, and community living. It is hard work and living quarters are rustic, so be prepared for an exciting challenge . The community is close knit, concentrating on communication, support, trust, and acceptance.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

At Clearwater, we realize the importance of raising environmental awareness across socio-economic and ethnic lines. This internship was created to raise the consciousness of environmental justice issues, to develop maritime interest and skills in young people, and to encourage participation among city-living youth so that our programs will directly reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. We are looking for young people who are enthusiastic, willing to learn and ready for a challenge.

Internships are for young people ages 16-21 from urban areas in the Hudson River region. Applicants should be interested in one or more of the following: the environment, sailing, history, teaching, and the outdoors. Interns that excel will be strongly encouraged to continue with Clearwater as volunteers, activists or crewmembers.

This program might not for everybody. As an intern from 2004 put it, “you have to be able to be flexible and work with everyone. An open mind is definitely needed.” Interns must be self-motivated, have a positive attitude, be comfortable living closely with people whose background may be different from their own, and be able to live in a setting with little privacy or comforts. Applicants are strongly encouraged to visit the boat and sail as our guest before committing to an internship.

interns3TIME AND MONEY

Internships are one week in length and during that time interns live aboard the boat. They receive free room and board on the boat. Most internships happen in the summer, but internships are available from April through October.

This is a competitive program since we recruit from many community groups and schools. Spaces are limited–each week there are two interns aboard. We understand that schedules can change with little notice, but if you formally accept an internship, please be prepared to honor your full internship commitment.

WHAT HAVE PREVIOUS INTERNS SAID ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE?

“At first I did not know anything about the Hudson River. This experience made me open my eyes and see things I never saw before.” — Lisa from 2004 season

“The coolest thing I’ve ever done is sail for four weeks going up and down the Hudson River, teaching and learning about the ecology of the Hudson while sailing with some 20 of my best friends.” — an intern from 2004
