Camp Clearwater

Creating the Next Generation of Environmental Leaders!

Now Scheduling Summer 2012
Camp Clearwater is not a typical residential camp experience; our programs are continuous multi-element adventures.  We travel along the Hudson River and hike throughout the Hudson Valley. Each day we arrive at a new destination. Our program promotes positive community-building, where each young person has an equal voice. During the course of the program, they develop knowledge and respect for the natural world and leave the program having experienced first-hand the history, ecology, and culture of the Hudson River Valley.

The majority of our summer programs are 5-20 days in length, yet the amount of growth that can occur in this short period of time is amazing.  Our program structure is what makes this possible.  At Clearwater, we inspire with adventure and equip with education. We work in a small group setting to achieve a positive and effective team, paying close attention to each individual’s personal development.  It is our goal to inspire young people and provide them with the tools necessary to become the next generation of environment leaders.

All activities are facilitated by two or three highly trained, nurturing and experienced instructors. All program elements start at a beginner level and increase with gained experience. At the end of the program, students will see that they are stronger and better equipped to take charge of their own lives, while making a positive difference in the world around them.

Camp Clearwater is a co-ed program serving a diverse group of youth ages 13-15.  All meals, transportation and specialized equipment will be provided during the program. A clothing list is available. There are a limited number of scholarships available. For more information or to register, contact Angel Martinez, Camp Director at CampDir@Clearwater.org, or call 845 265 8080, ext 7161.  Click here for the Camp Clearwater 2012 application!

Program Description
Our programs are continuous, multi-element, overnight adventures.  During adventure components, students sleep in tents, learn low-impact camping, and outdoor cooking skills.  When transitioning between adventure components students will return to camp, where they will sleep in cabins, have access to showers, and communicate with love ones.  They will engage in various large group educational programs as well as in traditional camp activities.

Our Program Elements
Sloop Clearwater
Students will experience the river from the decks of our historic sloop, participating in our award-winning onboard education program. Highlights include raising the mainsail, deploying the fishing net, and steering the vessel.

Native American Fur Trader Canoe
History and the culture of the Native Americans from the Hudson River Valley will be gained. They will explore the Hudson River while on a 32 foot Native American Fur Trader Canoe.

Kayaking
The group will complete a full day of training, then embark on a multi day expedition. Along the way they will explore the life and history of the Hudson River and participate in water ecology activities.

Backpacking, Rock Climbing
Students will learn “leave no trace” practices and land navigation and also climb a true rock face. This will develop principles of environmental stewardship and build self-confidence.
