Have you ever wondered what kinds of fish live in the Hudson River? Join us for the G reat Hudson River Estuary Fish Count on Saturday\, July 31st strong> to find out! The Fish Count will take place at 11 different sites along the banks and piers of the Hudson and East Rivers from New York City to Peebles Island State Park near Albany.
\nFresh upriver and salty at New York City\, the tidal Hudson and its watershed are home to more th an 200 fish species. During this family-fri endly event\, participants are invited to explore the amazing variety of s lippery\, wriggly\, and fascinating creatures usually hidden below the riv er’s surface. Depending on the site\, seines\, minnow traps\, or rods and reels are used. At many sites\, participants can help haul a seine – a cur tain of net used in shallow water – or try their luck with a fishing rod. After naturalists display and discuss the catch\, the fish are released ba ck to the river.
\nThe Great Hudson River Estuary Fish Count is free. For details on sites\, locations\, and times\, please visit DEC’s website. Dams are coming down and many women are leading the charge! Laura will focus on the steps to remove a dam and highlight s ome of the efforts of the many women who are making it happen. Eli Caref was born and raised in the concrete playgrounds o f Brooklyn\, New York\, and throughout her childhood believed that nature was always “somewhere else.” Through her years in Environmental Education in and around New York City\, she now knows that wildlife is everywhere yo u look\, and her goal is to help all of her students find it in their own backyards.
