DESCRIPTION:Join the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater for a symposium on the Clean Wat
er Act.
\n
\nJoin the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater
on Friday\, April 14 for a symposium on the Clean Water A
ct to reflect upon the progress made in the 50-years since its passage\, e
xplore its limitations\, and discuss opportunities and emerging threats to
continued progress toward a swimmable and fishable Hudson River. Passed i
n 1972\, the Clean Water Act established the goal of fishable and swimmabl
e waters across the United States by 1983\, as well as the elimination of
pollutants into navigable waters by 1985. Though these goals have yet to b
e met\, the CWA has resulted in significant improvements to water quality
in the Hudson River and its tributaries. At the same time\, new threats to
the Hudson have emerged\, creating new obstacles to reaching the goals of
the Clean Water Act.
\nThe symposium will bring together experts fr
om across the region to explore the history of the Clean Water Act\, progr
ess towards its goals over the last five decades\, as well as new emerging
threats to the Hudson River. The program will include life-long activist
and Hudson River advocate John Cronin and a series of topically fo
cused panel discussions with Q&A.
\nThough the Symp
osium will be held in person\, we will be providing a way to view the symp
osium virtually. If you plan to attend remotely\, please select the approp
riate ticket option.
\nWith questions about the Symposium\,
please e-mail ea2@clearwater.org.

\nAs a music-maker
\, the multi-talented singer/songwriter/guitarist has maintained two long
and productive parallel careers\, both as a highly respected contemporary

d from Guy’s childhood to Pete’s passing in 2014. He is doing this show to
honor Clearwater Environmental Action Director Manna Jo Greene\, who rece

the communities in its watershed. All proceeds will go towards continuing
this work\, underwriting the iconic sloop Clearwater and the organization’

k\, Rap\, Spoken Word\, and World Music to comment on\, and address the fr

In August\, Governor Hochul signed the Save the Hudson bill\
, which makes it illegal to dump the radioactive waste produced from India
n Point into the Hudson River. This was a huge victory — but what happ
ens now with that waste and what can we do to make sure it doesn’t end up
in our air or water?
\n
Join us on Monday\, November 20t
h\, for a forum on how to keep Indian Point’s radioactive waste from getti
ng into our air and water.
\n
This forum will give you an up
date on where we are now and will feature decommissioning expert Arnie Gun
dersen\, Chief Engineer at Fairewinds Associates\, who suggests one way to
keep Indian Point’s radioactive safe and on-site. For background\, see Ar
nie Gundersen’s video here: https://tinyurl.com/SafeOnsiteStorage
\n
Our grassroots movemen
t successfully pressured Governor Hochul to protect our river from toxic d
umping. Now we’ll need to again raise our voices to ensure none of this wa
ste is released into New York’s air or water and that we move forward with
the safe decommissioning of the Indian Point plant.

DESCRIPTION: On Thursday Mar. 21 at 7:00 pm The Beacon Sloop Club’s
2024 Lecture Series Presents\, Commercial Fishing on the Hudson River w/
John Mylod\, discussing the natural history of shad\, herring\, sturgeon\,
blue crabs\, and the history of the Hudson River fishery.
\n
Albany was once known as ‘Sturgeontown’ due to the large amounts of ‘Alb
any Beef’ caught in the Hudson River. Shad nets and fishing weirs were onc
e a sign of spring. At the time of the first European’s arrival the river
was teeming with fish\, sustaining a native population with its bounty.\n
In the 18th and 19th century commerci
al fishing provided employment to a large number of fishermen both on the
New York and New Jersey sides of the Hudson River.
\n
In the 20
th century fish populations declined due to pollution and overfis
hing\, much of it offshore\, and commercial fishing all but disappeared.
div>\n John Mylod\, one of the last commercial fishermen on the H
udson River\, served 15 years as the executive director of Hudson River Sl
oop Clearwater. He is a writer and environmentalist. An expert on all thi
ngs related to the Hudson River\, John often consults on films focusing on
the river and serves as an expert resource for media outlets including ra
dio and print press. He currently sits on the Department of Environmental
Conservation’s Hudson River Estuary Management Advisory Committee.

DESCRIPTION:
Join the Rivertown Film Society fo
r a screening of American River\, a documentary film following writer Mary
Bruno\, who grew u
p along the Passaic River\, and embarked on a 4-day\, 80-mile kayaking adv
enture navigating the twists and turns of the Passaic River\, with filmmak
er Scott Morris and river-guide Carl Alderson. Together they paddle from t
he river’s pristine source in a wildlife refuge\, through Paterson’s great
falls\, past Mary’s hometown\, and on to its end in Newark Bay. The river
’s amazing history\, geology\, and ecology are revealed as the kayakers na
vigate its challenges\, travel through urban landscapes\, and head toward
the industrial disaster that has poisoned the Passaic for the past 60 year
s. Along the way\, they engage residents\, historians\, and advocates in c
andid conversations that bring insight\, urgency\, and a sense of wonder t
o the story. How did the Passaic become one of the most contaminated river
s in America? Can it be saved? The Passaic is an archetype for thousands o
f rivers across America facing similar reckonings.
\n
Following the screening\, environmental attorney and fil
mmaker Susan Shapiro will moderate a discussion with American River’s film
maker Scott Morris and river guide Carl Alderson.

The Kennedys — Pete an
d Maura — have been recognized frequently for their harmonies and instrume
ntal prowess. Their music blends elements of country\, bluegrass\, Western
swing and janglepop. When performing live\, Pete plays acoustic and elect
ric guitars\, an electric sitar\, bass\, mandolin\, and ukulele\, while Ma
ura plays acoustic and electric guitars and ukulele.
\n
\n
The
y have performed in clubs and theatres throughout the United States and Ir
eland. Their Half a Million Miles CD celebrated Pete and Maura’s first dec
ade of married life and their first 500\,000 tour miles as increasingly be
loved purveyors of an exuberant blend of lively musical genres.
\n
Pe
te Kennedy’s debut novel Floodwood is a mixture of fantasy and mythology w
hich will appeal to area residents as it includes a werewolf running loose
in suburban Westchester County (NY)!

Oh Hudson! is a rich multi-arts celebration of the history\,
people\, and promise of the Hudson River Valley. Drawing on the music of
Pete Seeger\, old river tunes\, and new original songs\, this collaboratio
n project will make your feet stomp and your heart open to the beauty of t
he Hudson River.
\n
David Gonzalez is a nationally celebrated storyte
ller and poet with a gift of lifting the spoken word to the highest artist
ic heights. He is a Fellow of the Joseph Campbell Foundation\, and was nom
inated for a Drama Desk Award for “Unique Theatrical Experience.”
\n
Genre busting duo Koehler & Kelly blend the raw energy of traditional fidd
ling with the nuanced lyricism of jazz piano. Gretchen Koehler’s left hand
has an Irish brogue and her bow arm provides a distinct Old Time drive\,
while her feet hammer out accompaniment on the floorboards in typical Queb
ecois style. TIME Magazine calls Koehler “astonishingly good.” Award-winni
ng pianist and composer Daniel Kelly blends jazz\, classical\, and folk mu
sic into his signature sound. Time Out New York declares Kelly “powerfully
moving.” In concert\, they spark an innovative musical conversation while
celebrating a deep respect for folk music traditions.
